Recognising the importance of swimming and water safety for people with disabilities, Duncan Edwards Leisure Centre are now running STA’s Rockhopper series . This is the most comprehensive and progressing programme for people aged 3 to 15 years with disabilities.

Course details

Day: Saturday

Times: 9am - 9.30am, 11am - 11.30am, 11.30am - 12pm or 12pm - 12.30pm

Age group: 3 to 15 years

Duration: Minimum 10 lessons

Cost: £8.00 per lesson (must be booked as part of a course). Options+ Leisure Discount available

The Rockhopper series is an exciting programme consisting of 9 awards which introduce learners with disabilities to the joy of water. The series develops water confidence and water skills as well as increasing water safety awareness and knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

1. Enter the water with support

2. Respond to water being gently sprinkled over limbs

3. Show enjoyment of being in the water

4. Lie on the back or front with adult support and be towed around the pool

5. Push a floating toy around the pool using any part of the body

6. Blow through a straw, whistle or blow a floating toy or watch, listen or feel a toy being blown

7. Move limbs in an alternating action

Term-time Quiet swim session: Wednesday 2.40pm - 3.50pm

Saturday family fun disability swim: Saturday 1.15pm - 2.15pm

School holidays Family fun disability swim: Wednesday 2.45pm - 4.30pm (Time may be subject to change). Please see our school holiday activities page for further information. Saturday family fun disability swim: Saturday 1.15pm - 2.15pm

Session descriptions

Quiet swim: A swim without music on the poolside. Available to all members of the public. Please note, other activities (swimming lessons and lane swimming) also take place in the main pool during this session.

Saturday family fun disability swim: This session runs all year round and is for adults and children with disabilities and their families. Free swimming QR codes cannot be used in these sessions during the school holidays.

Family fun disability swim: For people with disabilities, special educational needs, ASD and their families. Free swimming QR codes can be used in this session during the school holidays.

Planet Play is for our younger centre users and is an exciting adventure play area, comprising of three sections. It can accommodate young toddlers and children under the age of 11 years, with a maximum height of 148cm.

We run a SEN session every Wednesday from 5:00pm to 6:00pm for children and their siblings.

A quiet gym session takes place every Friday, 11.00am - 12.00pm. The gym music is turned off during this session. This is available to all gym members.

Please note to access the gym facilities a gym induction is required and a data key must be purchased (the gym induction must be pre-booked).

A circuits class takes place every Monday 8.00pm - 9.00pm and is instructed without music.

This class is suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and above. A parental/carer consent form must be completed for all children under 16 years of age participating in this class.

Our Wellness Suite is fully equipped with state-of-the-art Shapemaster toning machines. Each machine uses power assisted technology which provides help to move specific areas of the body with low impact support.

How do the machines work?

There are twelve machines in total; each one having a specific use so that customers can exercise particular areas of concern with ease. This circuit-based session is bookable in 60- minute slots enabling you to access each piece of equipment. It also allows you recovery time between each piece of kit.

Who can use the Wellness Suite?

These low impact exercises can be used by people of any age and of any ability. The toning machines will particularly be useful for people with mobility issues, those who require physiotherapy or who are rehabilitating after surgery. Our fully trained advisers will be on hand to ensure the correct use of each piece of equipment.

Use information

You must be 16 years of age to use the Wellness Suite. Exceptions may apply to under 16s if there is a physical need and it will improve a child's medical condition.
